High resolution and great depth of field

Cost of ownership – equipment requirements – maintenance

Benchtop SEMs do not require specialized infrastructure or expert supervision so we can place them in practically any laboratory.


They do not require maintenance contracts which makes them very attractive.


However, the size of its electron column and the design of its detectors mean that they cannot be repaired on-site and must be sent to the factory for repair with the consequent disruption and economic cost.

Fortunately, the latest generation table top microscopes allow the user to change the electron source themselves (after a brief training during installation) and the equipment can be updated and repaired on-site by the technical service.


If that were not limiting enough, if we do not have a sufficiently clean vacuum level (high vacuum) and we have to necessarily work in low vacuum (or high pressure) mode, our electron beam will be continually disturbed by the air molecules that remain in the microscope. The last thing a microscope manufacturer wants is to always have to work, especially with samples that do not need it, using a very poor level of vacuum.
